Lay a good foundation for Your Faith .. and Your Thinking
Let’s begin with what we “KNOW” .. God has blessed each human being, young and old , with a most fabulous computer – it is your very mind! This mind of yours given and created by God, Our Creator! We utilize this device throughout life – we use it for storing information .. and processing data, input, information, ourl thoughts, our feelings, all our sensory input – visuals, instructions, truths .. and “untruths” – whatever you load into your personal computer – is exactly what you can expect to get back out of it! THINK ABOUT IT – PRAY ABOUT IT – your entire lifetime so far with all the “input and instruction” .. negative and positive .. all loaded into your “personal God-Given computer” .. before you were even seven years old .. before you were even able to think on your own! But what about now? What about all the “input” you have made over the years .. even the last 10, 20 or thirty years .. information that was originally based on what you believed you believe – because someone “taught you” all this as a child? That “someone else” who was helping to “program” and load information into your computer ( your own mind ) .. have you ever even considered what you may have “loaded” .. before you knew what input was? .. FOR INSTANCE, what about all your inputs from early childhood, your environment, brothers, sisters, parents .. friends .. the Nuns, or The Priests .. your school teachers or college proffessors?
My friend in Jesus .. we call this the “GiGo” Concept .. GIGO .. Garbage In, Garbage Out .. It means that if invalid, wrong, negative or impure data is entered in a computer program ( let’s imagine your own mind ) .. the resulting output will also be invalid .. and thinking it’s right or okay – will never make it right! If a program asked you to enter a letter of the alphabet and you decided to be funny and enter “3.14159”, there’s a good chance the results you would get back would be pretty messed up, or “garbage.” Becoming smart enough to program .. or re-program your own mind and enter valid data, takes extensive measures to prevent GIGO errors.
THE CHRISTIAN LIFE – Your Thoughts and Your Actions Speak Volumes .. “Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts” (Proverbs 4:23). The Lord can help us control our thoughts. Philippians 4:7 says, “And God’s peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with Christ Jesus.” Our thoughts please God when they are clean and pure. “In conclusion, my brothers, fill your minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honorable” (Philippians 4:8).
To keep our minds on that which is pleasing to God requires constant self-discipline .. and prayer .. and as long as we are in this world we will be exposed to sin and temptation, but with the Lord’s help we do not have to yield. An old proverb says, “The birds may pass overhead, but you don’t have to let them build a nest in your hair.” In other words, “Temptation may be all around you, but you don’t have to let it become sin in your mind and actions.” The best way to control our thoughts, to keep our minds free from evil, is to be careful what we see, hear, say, and do – IN OTHER WORDS – what you input into your mind and heart!
Be careful what you allow yourself to look at .. and see! “The eyes are like a lamp for the body. If your eyes are sound, your whole body will be full of light” (Matthew 6:22). What we hear also influences our thoughts .. and our “mental input” . Mark 4:24 says, “Pay attention to what you hear!” .. when is the last time you even considered the “input” that comes from your conversations with others .. or what about the music you listen to – the rythyms .. the beats .. the subtle words that come in .. Is your input today helping you to love the Lord more? .. building healthier thoughts? .. If your answer is negative perhaps you need to “begin re-programming your inputs” .. discipline your allowable input .. remember something called “SELF-TALK” .. Listening includes hearing our own words as well as the words of others. What we say can be a strong influence for good or for evil in our own life .. If someone wrongs us we can forget it more easily if we haven’t answered the person in ugliness .. Proverbs 15:1 says it like this, “A gentle answer quiets anger, but a harsh one stirs it up.”
Consider this goal .. maybe consider the fulfillment of Proverbs 25:11, “An idea well-expressed is like a design of gold, set in silver.” .. Our Lord, Jesus Christ, by the Power of His Holy Spirit will assist you in doing and “inputing” what is good. .. Our response is the beginning of Wisdom .. “Lord, may the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart be pleasing in your eyes. You are my Rock and my Redeemer.!” (Psalm 19:14).
